The International Council of the Third International Golden Trezzini Awards for Architecture and Design was joined by Marco Borradori, Mayor of the City of Lugano, Switzerland. Starting with July 15, 2020, the Awards are officially supported by the Municipality of Lugano.

“The first St. Petersburg’s architect Domenico Trezzini was born in 1670 near the village of Astano, in the neighborhood of Lugano in the Swiss Ticino,” says Vladimir Zapevalov, Chairman of the International Council of the Golden Trezzini Awards, Representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation in St. Petersburg. “We believe it’s quite symbolical that on the 350th Anniversary of Domenico Trezzini’s birthday the Municipality of Lugano and its head Mr. Borradori are going to support the international architectural awards named after their great countryman.”

“We, citizens of Ticino, feel proud every time we hear enthusiastic comments about the Late Baroque architectural landmarks of St. Petersburg designed by Domenico Trezzini,” Marco Borradori declared.

Born in 1959 in Lugano, in 1983 Marco Borradori completed his studies in law at the Zurich University and then worked as a lawyer for several years. In 1991, he was elected to the National Council. A year after that he became an assessor in the Municipality of Lugano. In 1995, he became the state councilor of the Canton of Ticino. In 2013 he was elected as the Mayor of Lugano.

The Golden Trezzini Awards for Architecture and Design are named after Domenico Trezzini (1670—1734), Russian architect of Swiss origin, the first architect of St. Petersburg, author of the Peter and Paul Cathedral, Twelve Collegia Building and other masterpieces of Petrine Baroque. The motto of the Awards is “Architecture as Art.” The Awards have been taking place since 2018, supported by the Embassy of Russia in Switzerland, the Embassy of Switzerland in Russia, the Consulate General of Switzerland in St. Petersburg, Department of Culture and Tourism of Abu Dhabi, the School of Architecture and Planning of the University of New Mexico, and a number of other organisations and institutions.

The International Council of the Awards was established in 2020. The mission of the International Council is to promote architectural diplomacy, as well as to connect countries across the globe through participation of their architects, designers, renovators, and students in St. Petersburg-based competitions, exhibitions, and conferences, consolidated under the name of Domenico Trezzini.

The Honorary Chairman of the International Council of the Awards is Mikhail Piotrovsky, Director of the State Hermitage. Among the Council’s members, there are Chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism — Abu Dhabi HE Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Ambassador of Switzerland to Russia Yves Rossier, Ambassador of Russia to Switzerland Sergei Garmonin, Consul General of Switzerland in St. Petersburg Roger M. Kull, directors of a number of leading art museums from Russia, Europe and the USA, academic leaders, public officials, and diplomatic representatives.

The Golden Trezzini winners will be awarded with Golden Trezzini figurines and diplomas during the ceremony which will take place at Belmond Grand Hotel Europe, St Petersburg, on December 1, 2020. The best projects by competitors will be added to the collection of the Architectural Graphics Fund at the Museum of St. Petersburg History and take part in an annual exhibition at the Peter and Paul Fortress.

Entries for the Third International Golden Trezzini Awards for Architecture and Design can be submitted at till October 15, 2020. 90+ projects from Argentina, Belarus, Egypt, France, Japan, Italy, Latvia, Mexico, Norway, Portugal, Qatar, Russia, Serbia, Spain, and the USA are approved for participation at the moment. Participation is free of charge.
