Cathedral Complex in the Name of Saint Blessed Prince Alexander Nevsky
Category
Best Architectural Project Created with Hand-Drawn Graphics
About the project (provided by the applicant)
The Orthodox cathedral, including clerical and spiritual-educational spaces, is designed for the central city square on the site of the church dedicated to Saint Blessed Prince Alexander Nevsky, which was destroyed during the Soviet period. The master plan is composed around a semicircular plaza—an amphitheater—open to the main access road. Historical surrounding buildings are preserved and connected by galleries.
The volumetric and planning composition of the cathedral is based on a semicircular plan, echoing the form of the amphitheater as a public and performance space. The western end of the building is highlighted by a bell tower, while the eastern end features a small chapel. The main entrance through the southern narthex is formed by a “perspective” arch-loggia composed of semicircular elements. The center of the composition is emphasized with an extensive mosaic panel depicting scenes from the life of Saint Blessed Prince Alexander Nevsky.
