Project
Interior of the Chapel of St. Alexander Nevsky, St. Isaac’s Cathedral

Category
Best Implemented Restoration Project

About the project (provided by the applicant)
Over three years, complex and meticulous work was carried out to preserve the richly decorated chapel interior. The gilding of the stucco décor was refreshed using Mordan varnish, and artificial marble was polished to imitate various natural types. Plaster inserts with glue-based painting were cleaned and strengthened, regaining their luster. All surfaces were cleaned of dust and soot.

The oil paintings on the vaults and lunettes underwent extensive conservation procedures for both the paint layer and the underlying plaster. Losses in the painted layers were restored. Applied bronze decorations on the marble iconostasis were removed for the first time, washed on all sides, and reinstalled in their original positions.

In June 2025, the large-scale interior restoration was completed.
