About the project (provided by the applicant)
The Bratsk Hydropower Plant Construction Museum is the historical center and heart of the city of Bratsk. It preserves the memory of the construction of the Bratsk Hydropower Plant—one of the largest in the world—which gave rise to the city’s development.
This project shifts the emphasis away from the monumentality, heroism, and sacrifice of the first builders toward the romanticism of nature, the element of water, and the hydropower plant itself.
The museum building is a typical structure in the style of constructivism with elements of brutalism. The design preserves the structural foundation of the museum—evoking the outlines of the power station and its locks. The idea for a textured metal façade and a transformable domed roof came immediately: the power plant should not just stand still, it should work. It should express the flow of water, the shimmer in sunlight—dynamics captured through metal and glass.
The project includes a redesigned façade and two small architectural forms: crystalline-style pavilions, benches, and a fountain—all elements that reflect the spirit of the city. Constructivism transitions into a form of romantic futurism—visions of a once-dreamed bright future now realized in this project, offering hope for the city’s tomorrow.
