The project is a graphic reconstruction of the Indian Caravanserai, built in the Middle Ages in Bukhara, one of the main trading hubs on the Great Silk Road. The Indian Caravanserai was completely demolished in the early 20th century, and today a green area occupies its site.
Merchants from India lived in the caravanserai. Locally, it was called the “Elephant Palace” because the caravanserai had a special room for housing elephants.
The reconstruction used the method of proportions. In the Middle Ages, each architect had their own unit of measurement called a “tirsak” (cubit), which averaged 30 cm. This unit varied for each architect, as it was based on their own arm length. We also used a 30-cm module to recreate the plan and applied the proportion method to restore the facades and overall appearance.
