About the project (provided by the applicant)
The site listed in the Unified State Register of Cultural Heritage of the Peoples of the Russian Federation as “Church of Stefan, 14th century” is located within the protected area “Quarantine” on a small elevation in the southeastern part of the former Armenian fortress. The Church of Saint Stefan (Armenian – Surb Stepanos), or Saint Stefan the First Witness, belongs to the type of single-apse hall-vaulted structures built from rubble stone with lime mortar.
The building’s exterior is quite clear, consisting of an elongated rectangular volume covered by a gable roof and an adjoining semicylindrical apse with a conical roof. Depending on the terrain, the apse is oriented slightly south of true east. The outer dimensions of the main rectangular volume are 12.0 × 8.7 m. The church is built from lime rubble with lime mortar mixed with coarse sea sand.
