Project
Fomin House: Adaptation of a Cultural Heritage Site into a Kindergarten

Category
Best Implemented Project for Adaptation of a Cultural Heritage Site

About the project (provided by the applicant)
Restoration of the Fomin House, a regional cultural heritage monument built at the turn of the 19th–20th centuries, has been completed in Yekaterinburg. The mansion retains traces of multiple transformations: from communal housing to major renovations in the early 2000s, including replacement of wooden floors with reinforced concrete and repainting of the façade. The building’s history was preserved by leaving visible seams and variations in brickwork. Windows with double muntins and T-shaped glazing were restored. The pitched roof was insulated, and the attic converted into a mansard. Damaged bricks were restored: some replaced with donor samples, others reconstructed using stone substitutes. The architects aimed to integrate the building into city life and convey its value to future generations through its new use.

The mansion has been adapted into a kindergarten for 60 children aged 3–7, featuring play, learning, and development spaces, including a sports and music hall, a library, and creative workshops in the mansard.
