House “Frankenstein”

Best Implemented Reconstruction Project

About the project (provided by the applicant)
This old two-story office building was in a terrible, nearly derelict condition. Everything had fallen into disrepair at least 20 years ago. The old Soviet mosaic panel suffered the most, and we managed to restore it — it was literally hanging in the air, a few centimeters away from the wall, and it was unclear what kept it in place. Many fragments were missing. Several months of painstaking work allowed us to preserve it for future generations.

During the removal of the old plaster, we discovered chaotically sealed windows and doors of various shapes. Officially, the building dates back to the late 1930s, but the arched windows, gallery between floors, and bricked-up openings leading to the neighboring 19th-century structure point to earlier layers of history.

As it turned out, the house consists of at least four buildings from different periods — a true “Frankenstein.” In the design, we decided to preserve all these traces of time, resulting in a rather surreal interior where pre-revolutionary and Soviet eras intertwine — and now, our own.
