Restoration of the “Gaьgi-GIalash” Architectural Complex
Category
Best Architectural Project Created with Hand-Drawn Graphics
About the project (provided by the applicant)
The medieval tower architectural complex “Gaьgi-GIalash” is located on a separate stone outcrop on the banks of the Assa River in the Dzheyrakh Gorge, Republic of Ingushetia. The complex was the first of the tower complexes that defended the gorge in the Middle Ages. It has preserved fragments of a combat tower, four residential towers, and a stone defensive wall. Unique 16th-century structures were heavily damaged during the 19th and 20th centuries. Red highlights indicate the preserved fragments of the towers and walls of the complex.
Based on iconographic materials, the project provides for the restoration and reconstruction of the combat tower and two residential towers, as well as the defensive wall. Fragments of two residential towers are to be conserved. Comprehensive restoration of the complex is scheduled to begin in 2026.
