About the project (provided by the applicant)
The Russian Museum presented a grand exhibition “Great Karl. On the 225th Anniversary of the Birth of Karl Bryullov” at the Mikhailovsky Palace.
A contrasting and ambiguous intervention into the historic architecture allowed for a new perspective on both the interiors of the Academic Halls and the artist’s paintings. The scenography of the exhibition was arranged in such a way that the visitor’s route and movement turned into a solemn ceremony, following the stages of the artist’s life and creative journey. This story, like the architectural composition itself, unfolds before the viewer step by step. Just a few key points shape the entire dramatic action.
The first hall, which features the artist’s early and student works, was deliberately left untouched by the architect. Then follows a rapid ascent — a ramp leading to “The Last Day of Pompeii,” the artist’s most famous and significant painting, where the visitor “soars” toward the canvas that brought him worldwide fame.
