Restoration of the Church of the Holy Trinity
Category
Best Implemented Project for Restoration of Religious Building in Russia
About the project (provided by the applicant)
The cultural heritage site of regional significance “Church of the Holy Trinity” is located on the picturesque bank of the Neva River on Oktyabrskaya Embankment. The five-domed church was built to the design of architect G. I. Karpov in 1862–1865 in the style of 17th-century Russian Orthodox churches. In 1937 the church was closed, and in 1938 the bell tower was blown up and the domes with five cupolas were dismantled. During the Soviet period, after additional floors were inserted inside the building, all interior and façade decorations were destroyed. Several years ago, architectural and interior solutions for the restoration of the church were developed. The works have now been fully completed.
