About the project (provided by the applicant)
Derbent is the oldest city in Russia, actively developing by integrating new architectural objects into its medieval fabric.
The new embankment in the northern part of the city represents contemporary architecture in the historic city, standing out with its modern form against the historical backdrop.
The building’s form is inspired by several visual references. The canopy of tent structures near the pool wing morphologically resembles sails with a mast, while the terrace canopy on the other side evokes the bow of a yacht. The asymmetrical plan emphasizes the overall asymmetry of the building volume.
The contrast between the modern, dynamic form of the building on the new embankment and the fortification-centered historic surroundings symbolizes the connection between old and new, past and future.
