About the project (provided by the applicant)
In the process of modernization, some cities have managed to preserve their cultural roots and traditional architecture; others have not. This apartment project is located in Rasht, one of Iran’s cities, where most new buildings follow a generic modern, international style. Our aim was to avoid creating just another anonymous building. We sought to look back to Iran’s past and bring some of its soul into a contemporary form.
Traditional Iranian houses often featured «orsi» windows (tall frames with colorful stained glass). Rasht is also known for its people’s vibrant traditional clothing, with women’s pleated skirts standing out as a symbol of local identity.
Inspired by this, we translated the folds of the skirts into abstract forms, shaping the windows in a zigzag pattern and using colorful glass. The result is a building that feels as lively and dressed-up as the skirts that inspired it.
Careful placement of staircases and balconies minimized overlooking neighboring properties.
