K-1A: Affordable Housing
Category
Best Project of Residential or Mixed-Use Estate
About the project (provided by the applicant)
The K-1A project was developed as a response to the housing crisis in New York City. It is not just a tower but a hybrid infrastructure combining affordable housing, retail, cultural, and public spaces. Two vertical cores — technical and social — create a flexible typology including studios, family apartments, and collective living modules. Terraces, green platforms, and intermediate voids break the monotony of floors, generating a lively and diverse rhythm.
At street level, the building opens up to the city: shops, cultural centers, and services integrate it into the urban fabric. Upper floors feature productive balconies and shared spaces, reimagining vertical living as a collective experience. The tower is based on sustainability principles, including green façades, bioclimatic strategies, and universal accessibility.
K-1A has received international recognition as the winner of the Affordable Housing 2025: New York competition, highlighting its innovative approach to the concept of the vertical city.
