Project Fences of Kazan Cathedral and the Square on Kazanskaya Ploshchad
Best Art in Outdoor Public Space
About the project (provided by the applicant) On the initiative of the Gazprom Cultural Initiatives Foundation, it was decided to replace the temporary fencing around Kazan Cathedral and the square, which strongly clashed with the unique ensemble of the area. Based on a discovered historical prototype, a new fence was designed for Kazan Square, fully respecting its scale.
The aesthetic essence of the lattice is a meander motif at the top with vertical divisions spaced 16 cm apart. The height of the lattice is 1.15 m, with span widths ranging from 1.94 m to 2.06 m. The decorative focus is a cast-iron medallion featuring the coat of arms of St. Petersburg, installed at the center of the meander in each fence section. The square fence includes five double-leaf gates, accentuated with cast decorative medallions on diagonal intersections, inspired by the bas-reliefs of Kazan Cathedral. The lattice is painted to imitate wrought iron as closely as possible.
The fence of Kazan Cathedral itself is executed in a neo-Gothic style with trifoliate motifs and finials.
