Project
Regional Cultural Heritage Site “Mosque,” part of the Khakmadoy Historical and Architectural Complex, XIV–XIX centuries
Category
Best Implemented Project for Restoration of a Religious Building in Russia
About the project (provided by the applicant)
The village of Khakmadoy is located at an altitude of 1,580 m on the right bank of the Sharoargun River, atop a ridge from Mount Baumkort. It consists of an elongated chain of medieval buildings stretching from west to east, most of which are now in ruins. The mosque occupies the central position — a large structure by local standards (13.05 × 15.30 m), built from well-dressed stone using a clay-lime mortar.
The building is two stories and situated on a slope, so the walls vary in height. The masonry thickness is 0.65 m. The first floor served as a school for children, while the second floor functioned as a prayer hall with three adjoining rooms. The main facade faces south; the mihrab (1.9 m high) is located centrally on the second floor, topped by a stone sphere. Doorways for both floors are on the west wall, which also has windows, one with a wrought-iron grille. The south facade features arched openings with keystones, and the north wall is partially destroyed. The east facade contains the entrance, a window, carved stone, and a plaque with Arabic calligraphy dated 1309.
