Project
KPLN Architecture Office in a 19th-Century Mansion
Category
Best Implemented Interior Design Project for Public Space
About the project (provided by the applicant)
The architectural ensemble created for the Alekseevskaya Pumping Station combines engineering functionality with aesthetic refinement. The mansion, built in 1892, was designed by Maxim Karlovich Heppener together with engineers Nikolay Zimin and Konstantin Dunker. Today, the main meeting room proudly bears the name “Heppener.”
During the Soviet era, the building suffered significant damage: its architectural features were hidden, and the façades distorted. Brickwork lost its original details, and the unique 19th-century ventilation system was partially destroyed and filled with debris.
The architects approached the restoration as an archaeological study: uncovering, examining, and preserving each element. For example, historic parquet was found beneath layers of linoleum, which had, in a way, protected the wood.
“Every layer of history is important. For us, this mansion is not just an office, but a symbol of careful respect for the past,” notes the KPLN team.
