Project
“Guardians of the Kronstadt Reef: From Peter the Great to the Present Day”
Category
Best Implemented Project of Temporary or Permanent Museum Exposition
About the project (provided by the applicant)
After 8 years of dedicated work and with the support of the Presidential Fund for Cultural Initiatives, the renewed exhibition was opened, covering the key stages of the 300-year history of the Russian fort — from the era of Peter the Great to the present day. The exhibition occupies 7 casemates of the barracks for lower ranks. It presents authentic items from the 16th–20th centuries: weapons, engravings, books, personal belongings of the fort’s officers and soldiers, ship and aircraft models, reconstructed uniforms, and more.
Interactive installations with unique chronicles in authentic interiors highlight lesser-known pages of local history:
– Peter the Great era — construction of the first fortifications on the western tip of Kotlin Island;
– late 19th century — the role of experimental structures on the reef in the development of Russian concrete fortifications;
– early 20th century — construction of the powerful fort, its armament, life of builders and garrison;
– Civil War — events of 1919 and the Kronstadt Rebellion of 1921;
– World War II — the heroic role of Fort “Komsomolsky” (Reef) in the defense of besieged Leningrad.
