Project
“Guarding the Northern Borders. Ladoga in the 16th–18th Centuries”
Category
Best Implemented Project of Temporary or Permanent Museum Exposition
About the project (provided by the applicant)
The exhibition tells the story of how history converged at the walls of Ladoga Fortress in the 16th–18th centuries. Ladoga became more than a fortress—it turned into a living symbol of Russia’s resilience. During the Time of Troubles, when the very existence of the country hung by a thread, these stone walls bore the brunt of northern invaders. In 1617, the Stolbovo Peace Treaty marked the end of this long confrontation, establishing new borders and a new era.
The new exhibition immerses visitors in that pivotal time, where every stone of the fortress recalls the roar of cannons, and the fates of defenders intertwine with the destiny of the nation. A scale model of the defensive structures allows visitors to envision Ladoga Fortress as it appeared in the 17th century. Visitors can meet the gaze of those who stood their ground—Russian warriors, Swedish soldiers, and diplomats whose decisions changed the map of the world.
This is more than an exhibition. It is an encounter with living history, where behind every exhibit stand lives, deeds, and decisions that shaped Russia’s path.
