Project
Opera “Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk”
Category
Best Implemented Theatre Set Design
About the project (provided by the applicant)
The stage design is organized with several layers of fences in different configurations. Each scene features a unique wooden fence that rises, revealing a new setting. The audience experiences a sense of peeking into the characters’ lives, full of secrets, as if watching partially through gaps.
Each layer includes boards that can be lifted by the performers, or doors hiding spaces such as bedrooms, hangars, or offices. The fences, like Katerina’s skirts, rise to create cascades of textures and shades, ranging from black to white. The first fence is a black street fence, while the last, at the wedding, is snow-white. In the penal labor scene, boards rotate from vertical to horizontal, forming a “lake” of planks. In the final drowning scene, the boards completely cover Katerina, leaving only parts of the platforms and fences on stage, reminiscent of a cemetery.
