Layers of hope

About the project (provided by the applicant)
The project is located near the UNESCO listed Pahlevanpour Garden in Mehriz, Yazd, Iran, and envisions a residential settlement designed with the capacity to host displaced families in times of war. The key concept reinterprets the traditional Godal-Baghcheh (sunken courtyard) as both a climatic and social device. At ground level, permanent housing units form the fabric of the neighborhood, while light tented structures between them serve as shaded spaces for gathering, play, and social interaction. At the lower level, the sunken courtyard surrounded by vaulted spaces serves a dual role: in daily life, it functions as a community bazaar, playground, and collective space; during emergencies, it transforms into dignified temporary housing for displaced families. The project balances everyday living with resilience, embedding cultural memory and contemporary needs into a unified design that embodies community, adaptability, and hope.
