Project
Revitalization of the Ruins of the Lichtenhagen Church
Category
Best Student Restoration or Reconstruction Project
About the project (provided by the applicant)
The church in the village of Yablonevka (formerly Lichtenhagen) in the Kaliningrad Region was built in the 14th century. It was damaged during the military operations of 1945 and later dismantled. Today, the Lichtenhagen Church is one of many churches in the Kaliningrad region that remain in a state of neglect for various reasons.
The project proposes the conservation of the existing ruins and the construction of a roof structure to protect them. The supporting framework is designed with glued laminated timber beams, while the silhouette of the destroyed bell tower is echoed by a lightweight metal structure. Beneath a single roof with the preserved church ruins, a new public center and museum are accommodated, and nearby there is a hotel and guest houses for tourists and pilgrims.
