About the project (provided by the applicant)
This house was designed for the Sang Siah area in Shiraz, where historic ruins attract visitors but also shelter the homeless. Our aim was to propose a new housing model within this context by re-examining the traditional house diagram and adapting it to contemporary life. Central to our concept was redefining the kitchen: once marginalized as the “Matbakh,” it is reimagined as a social condenser, a hub for care and interaction. Inspired by the Narkomfin building, we placed the kitchen at the heart of the house with a distinct form linking private and collective life. Guest rooms were reprogrammed as temporary spaces for those helping maintain the house and kitchen in exchange for accommodation. While the facade blends into the historic fabric, the interior opens new spatial possibilities. By centering everyday life and its reproductive roles, the project connects house and neighborhood, offering an alternative vision for urban infill in Shiraz.
