About the project (provided by the applicant)
Rajasthan has nurtured crafts like stone carving, textile printing, mirror work, and wood carving for centuries, yet urbanization is erasing many of them. The Miraj Crafts Village in Udaipur seeks to revive these traditions and spread awareness of their sustainable methods. Located on steep contoured land with a 16m level difference, the design follows the site’s organic form, echoing old city layouts with curvilinear volumes, shaded alleys, and larger gathering spaces. It includes craft display areas with artisans, a stepped auditorium along contours, café and restaurant spaces. Constructed in locally available sandstone, the complex creates multiple sheltered areas to combat heat exceeding 35°C for much of the year. Rainwater harvesting tanks at the lowest level support sustainable water use. By integrating with contours, using natural stone, incorporating water recycling, the project reduces its carbon footprint while uniting craftsmen communities and reviving Rajasthan’s heritage.
