Project
Redevelopment of the Moscow-Kursk Railway Car Depot
Category
Best Implemented Reconstruction Project
About the project (provided by the applicant)
The former Moscow-Kursk station car repair depot (1906) is an unusual object in the modern urban environment and a vivid example of early 20th-century industrial architecture. The project aimed to continue the depot’s multifaceted history through architectural forms.
The old building was carefully restored, preserving its unique details and even some graffiti, which have become part of the site’s cultural code. On the site of structures unsuitable for restoration, a new building was added. Its architecture emphasizes the adjacent historic building, using modern elements to create contrast and a new interpretation. Decorative elements “play” with the textured façade of the old building, but in a minimalist manner. This eclectic approach establishes a dialogue between the buildings.
Connecting elements of the project include landscaping and the creation of a new pedestrian route, integrating the formerly abandoned depot into the modern city environment.
