About the project (provided by the applicant)
The proposed complex is located in Kovdor, a monotown in Murmansk Region that developed around a mining and processing plant (GOK). The city’s architectural character, shaped during the Soviet era, is closely tied to industry, which has become part of its cultural identity. The concept of the complex is designed in the style of avant-garde and constructivism, emphasizing the dialogue between humans and machinery. The layout is inspired by the ideas of L. Khidekel: the building is arrow-shaped, oriented toward the GOK, and the cruciform composition divides the site into zones for staff and visitors. The main functions include a museum, botanical block, restaurant, library, and research center (R&D).
The architecture relies on constructivist principles. Red, a symbolic color for the avant-garde and a strong accent in the northern landscape, is a key design element. Avant-garde motifs are reflected in the building and interiors: the observation deck resembles the Red Nail Tower, and the greenhouse evokes Tatlin’s Tower. The “red ribbon” on the third floor unites the blocks. The climax of the visitor route is an observation deck hovering over the quarry.
