About the project (provided by the applicant)
The cultural heritage site of federal significance, “Nazran Fortress,” is located in the city of Nazran, Republic of Ingushetia. Construction of the Russian stone fortress began in 1834 on the site of a previously burned wooden fortress, which had been known since the late 18th century. The fortress featured a curved defensive wall over 1 km long with two entrances, three two-level round flanking towers, and one octagonal tower set apart from the main structure, connected by an underground passage.
The fortress withstood Shamil’s raids, various uprisings, and events of the early 20th century. Major destruction was caused 20 years ago by the construction of a hospital inside the fortress, during which many of its elements were demolished. The presented project recreates all the lost towers and walls. Implementation is scheduled to begin in 2026.
