About the project (provided by the applicant)
The scenography of the performance is designed in the spirit of a contemporary graphic novel: minimalist black-and-white transforming sets create a stylized space devoid of specific 18th-century details. The central element is an inclined platform resembling a page of a book, onto which dynamic black-and-white illustrations are projected and come to life in real time. Video graphics, stylized as engravings, and simple furniture (table, cardboard chairs) enhance the effect of a “living comic,” where the characters freeze in graphic poses or abruptly change the scenes, like frames in a music video.
Costumes, inspired by the 18th century, include modern accents: green velvet and wool contrast with Sophia’s mint-colored dress, while the loose cut of Mitrofanushka’s jacket and his glasses intentionally reference the “golden youth.” Details such as popping buttons in a fight scene emphasize the performance’s dynamism. The production maintains a historical foundation while making the characters light and easy to perceive, avoiding a “black-on-black” visual heaviness.
