Project
Restoration and Adaptation for Contemporary Use of the Federal Cultural Heritage Site “Complex of Fortress Buildings and Structures on the Island, 13th–19th Centuries. Olaf’s Tower, 1561–1564”
Category
Best Implemented Project for Adaptation of a Cultural Heritage Site
About the project (provided by the applicant)
The tower is named after Saint Olaf, one of the most venerated Christian saints in Scandinavia. The lower part of the structure is a preserved fragment of the medieval donjon of the 1293 castle. Inside the lower tiers, fragments of the medieval staircase and passages, as well as traces of a brick vault, have survived. In the 16th century, the donjon was rebuilt into an artillery tower and became the city’s main landmark. During the same period, a treadwheel hoist was installed to lift artillery and ammunition to the upper tiers.
Modern architectural solutions and materials minimally affect the authentic appearance, highlighting its uniqueness while ensuring more convenient and safer access for visitors. As part of the project, a new metal staircase running along the walls was built, a panoramic elevator was installed in the center of the tower, restoration of masonry was carried out, and modern engineering systems were installed to ensure efficient operation and safety of the site.
