Project
Omsk-Fedorovka Airport: The Code of the Past in the Architecture of the Future

Category
Best Project of Public Building or Facility

About the project (provided by the applicant)
The concept of Omsk-Fedorovka Airport is based on the idea of a fortress as the guardian of the steppes, connected to Omsk’s history as a fortress city. Architects transformed the idea of a city-fortress by “cutting” the conical ends of logs, enlarging and inverting them so that their height matches the terminal. The structures are composed of steel supports, fanning out from a single point into a ring at the top. Inside the ring is a skylight, and across the surface are thin steel cables that mask the main supports and emphasize the stereometric form.

The structure is transparent, allowing natural light from the skylights to illuminate the space during the day, while in the evening the conical volumes glow from within. The interior concept includes a winter garden with live trees and geoplastics.

The project received the Gold Award at the Urban Design & Architecture Design Awards 2025 and the Silver Award from the Union of Architects of Russia at the International Architectural Festival “Zodchestvo’24.”
