Reconstruction of the Pohjola Koitto Factory into a Local History Museum

About the project (provided by the applicant)
The former Finnish factory is located on Sorvali Island near Vyborg, on the shore of the Banny Bay. The main goal of the project was to create an educational museum dedicated to the building and the island as a whole, which witnessed several historical periods (the Russo-Finnish War, the collapse of the Soviet Union, the formation of the Russian Federation).
A key design approach is the creation of two opposing “main” façades: the first integrates the preserved historic building, while the second is a modern structure inspired by Finnish minimalist architecture. All new construction is executed in darker brick, maintaining focus on the historic heritage. The fleeting nature of time and the ephemerality of past centuries are expressed through white ventilated façade panels with a Voronoi diagram pattern: the further from the factory building, the finer the mesh—creating the impression of dissolution into space.
An art installation called the “Arch of Wishes” is planned along the waterfront to attract visitors to the recreational area.
