Contemporary education is increasingly focused on fostering communication—ongoing interaction between students, as well as with teachers and mentors, stimulates co-creation and helps cultivate a positive learning environment. In this horizontal-network model, recreation areas, previously seen as secondary, become central and key to the school’s spatial organization.
At the Yevgeny Primakov Gymnasium, learning in various disciplines is organized into separate blocks, all connected by a shared space—a large covered atrium. This atrium, the main recreational hub of the school, also functions as an assembly hall. With surrounding galleries on the second floor, the atrium can accommodate around one thousand people at a time. The atrium floor is designed as an artificial terrain, with terraced areas—“slope,” “grotto,” “hill,” and others—serving as functional zones. For example, one of the “slopes” houses the school library.
