About the project (provided by the applicant)
The premiere of Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s opera “The Queen of Spades,” staged by Vladimir Kekhman, took place at the Mikhailovsky Theatre on September 3, 2025. The set design for the new production was created by the theatre’s chief designer, People’s Artist of Russia Vyacheslav Okunev. In his work he combined classical and contemporary elements, highlighting the relevance of Pushkin’s plot.
Special attention was paid to working with space: a revolving stage appeared, enhancing the dynamics and unpredictability of the action. This solution made it possible to embody the director’s vision — the characters can instantly move between locations, appearing now in the Countess’s room, now at the card table.
