Revitalization of Art & Culture in the Old City of Famagusta by integrating Creative Spaces within the Urban Fabric

About the project (provided by the applicant)
The Revitalization of Art & Culture in the Old City of Famagusta aims to breathe new life into its layered historical fabric shaped by Venetian, Ottoman, and British influences. Once vibrant but now fragmented, the Old City remains rich with landmarks such as St. George’s Ruins, Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque, fortified walls, and ancient churches. The project adopts a landmark-driven yet harmonious approach, ensuring new interventions respect history while asserting a contemporary cultural identity. Centered on a “creative loop,” it links art and design schools, artist housing, cultural cafés, artisan workshops, performance zones, and exhibition spaces. British-period buildings and ruins are preserved and adapted, while outdoor nodes, plazas, and green corridors foster interaction and cultural engagement. This loop promotes exploration and connectivity, transforming the city into a living cultural hub. The proposal strikes a harmonious balance of Architecture, Restoration, and Urban Design
