Retreat Center in the Former Benedictine Abbey of Santa Maria del Piano

Category
Best Restoration or Reconstruction Project by Student

About the project (provided by the applicant)
The project aims to preserve the original silhouette of the church while compensating for the lost parts of the building to create a complete image and maintain the historical silhouette of the environment. The missing parts of the building “grow” from the preserved ruins and are enclosed within volumes, as if placed in a box. The Santa Maria del Piano church has a rich history connected with the Benedictine monastic order, reflected in the use of the order’s symbolism in the decoration of the new walls. The retreat center includes an auditorium, a yoga hall, changing rooms and showers, workshops, a library, a dining hall, and a shop. In the spirit of the place, a carillon was installed in the altar area, the music of which can be used during meditation to restore inner balance. A small library was organized on the mezzanine as a tribute to the Benedictines, who were always associated with books, and the stained glass design includes tinted patterns in the form of the Benedictine cross.
