Project
Revitalization Concept of the Siemens & Halske Telephone Factory Quarter
Category

About the project (provided by the applicant)
“Siemens & Halske” is a unique quarter in Nizhny Novgorod where time seems to have stood still. Longtime residents note that much of the area remains as it was in the mid-20th century. Known as the “Old Settlement,” it is located in the Prioksky District between Azovskaya Street, Podgornaya Street, and Gagarin Avenue. Its history began in 1916, when the first houses were built for employees of the Siemens & Halske telephone factory (now NITEL). The project was developed by the Riga-based Serka bureau, giving the architecture with attics and distinctive rooflines a Western European character.
The revitalization project aims to breathe new life into the quarter: facades along the avenue will host commercial spaces, while residential buildings with front gardens will appear deeper within the block—a revival of a long-forgotten housing format for the city. The historical landmark, the water tower, will be restored, and a new Catholic church will be constructed. Nearby, taller modern buildings will harmonize in silhouette with the historic surroundings.
