Project
Architectural Design of a Staircase
Category
Best Project of Public Building or Facility
About the project (provided by the applicant)
The designed staircase is part of a pedestrian route from the Spassky Cathedral through the historic earthen rampart of the Penza fortress, down the hillside to the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery, and onward to the Penza River embankment.
The top of the descent is aligned compositionally with the rampart staircase and is accentuated by two granite-topped pedestals, identical to elements on the opposite side. The newly created public space divides pedestrian flows and includes a rotunda under a canopy that houses a model of the fortress. At the base of the rotunda is a souvenir pavilion.
Using stylistically related and repeating architectural and design elements from the already implemented rampart improvement project creates a cohesive spatial spirit. The magnificent views from various points of the city’s riverside and surrounding areas enhance and illustrate the historical essence of the location where the city began.
