Project
Collection Storage in the Village of Staraya Ladoga

Best Architectural Design for Museum
About the project (provided by the applicant)
The central images of the project are shadows and imprints of the past. This metaphor materializes in the appearance of the building: architectural objects connected with the history of Staraya Ladoga are “imprinted” into the modern storage facility, and their metaphysical “shadow” takes on physical form. The borderline quality of the image is achieved through the inversion of the facade, the “misplacement” of window openings, and the contrast of materials. Like a collection of archaeological artifacts, this assemblage of “shadows” tells the unique story of the place and its people.
The building’s connection with the historical context is emphasized by the landscaping: the approach to the building is a bridge linking the two riverbanks, while the lowlands with scattered art objects resemble “excavations.” The planning structure of the building follows the functional zoning, expressed spatially. The appearance of the building and its surroundings relates not only to its functional purpose and historical context, but also to the emotional perception of the “spirit of the place” by its visitors.
