Project
Concept of the Storage Facility for the State Museum-Reserve “Staraya Ladoga”
Category
Best Architectural Design for Museum
About the project (provided by the applicant)
The architectural image of the storage facility concept reflects the authors’ focus on symbolism in form and historical allusions, expressed in the façade elements, which reference Old Russian architecture.
A reinforced concrete frame was chosen for the building’s structural scheme. The enclosing structures of the main façade are planned in lightweight concrete masonry with plaster, emphasizing the massiveness of the walls combined with the varied sizes of window openings. As additional decoration, metal grating elements are selected, stylized after carved gables and towels of traditional wooden architecture.
The semicircular element of the façade adjacent to the main entrance is intended as a reference to the apses of ancient Russian stone churches. Elements inspired by the architecture of Staraya Ladoga are contrasted with modern materials such as stained-glass glazing.
