The Friend’s House

About the project (provided by the applicant)
The Friend’s House is designed for those seeking the true meaning of home, located in the heart of Shiraz in the narrow alleys of “Sang Siah.” Empty, underutilized spaces in the neighborhood have caused visual disorder and prompted resident migration. The project aims to address this issue and encourage reverse migration. It accommodates two families with different lifestyles, adaptable over time, and fosters social connections across generations. Inspired by historical architecture—courtyard houses, pavilions, and sunken gardens—the house is set one level below street level to revive the open-to-sky courtyard concept. A pavilion links the two homes, and a reimagined pireneshin provides space for social interaction. The plans allow flexible living and working arrangements, while the façade draws inspiration from Abbas Kiarostami’s film Where is the Friend’s House? and his iconic zigzag motif, blending cinematic and architectural expression.
