About the project
103 citizens lost their lives, and hundreds were injured due to the terrorist bomb attack which happened just before the start of the march called as Labor, Peace and Democracy held in Ankara on October 10,2015. The “International Ideas Competition for Labor, Peace and Democracy Memorial Square and Place” was organized by NGOs to reconsider the square as a kind of ‘memorial square’ for commemorating the people who lost their lives in the massacre. This project is winner of this competition.
On October 10th, people gathered to demand peace and democracy. Every one of them have different background however they were here together as a whole for saying “peace”.
Man’ skin is protector for soul and thoughts. Like a shell, our body works as a shield to protect our spirit. In that black day, they wanted to kill people’s thoughts, hopes and alliances via killing people. Our idea is eternizing dead people via representing as a tree. Unlike their purpose, to grow a hope in this steppe, we are creating a place that we’re gathering and standing under these trees against fighting to the dark together. We will be whole in their shadows.
103 victims in this square are represented as the Ginkgo biloba that was cultivated early in human history. Unlike human body, Body (tree) and spirit (thoughts) change place. Thoughts and hopes (timeless skin) will protect the tree body. Durable to all kinds of environmental conditions, Ginkgo is a symbol of resistance and surviving.
