Tretyakov Gallery Branch in Kaliningrad

Best Architectural Design for Museum
About the project (provided by the applicant)
The total area of the newly built Tretyakov Gallery branch in Kaliningrad is 17,600 sq. m, with exhibition halls covering 4,500 sq. m. The architectural concept makes the building an extension of the city: thanks to the glass walls of the ground floor, the transition inside becomes seamless, creating the impression of a single “urban square.” In addition, the building appears to float in the air. This effect is achieved by a 15-meter cantilever and specially designed lighting. Another distinctive feature and architectural landmark is the 50-meter tower with stained-glass glazing.
The central interior element is the grand staircase. Despite its monumentality, it looks almost weightless thanks to a structure supported only at two points — at the bottom and at the top.
Another unique feature of the museum complex is its combination of natural and artificial light. For natural illumination, 126 skylights were installed on the roof, each custom-made for the project.
