The Assumption Cathedral “at Gorodok” in Zvenigorod is the earliest fully preserved monument of early Moscow architecture (1393–1416). Its transitional forms are of great importance for the history of Old Russian architecture. However, the completion of the cathedral underwent serious distortions in the second half of the 18th century, when a four-pitched roof was added. It has survived in this altered form until today.
In the first version of the restoration project, it was decided to preserve the existing roof, as there was insufficient data to reconstruct the original zakomar covering. During further research, parts of the monument that had previously been inaccessible were revealed, and missing elements of the dismantled zakomars and other details were discovered. This made it possible to apply the method of anastylosis and restore the monument’s authenticity to the fullest extent. Preservation of authenticity in all elements determined the methodology and technology of the entire restoration process.
