Category
Best Implemented Project for Adaptation of a Cultural Heritage Site
About the project (provided by the applicant)
The Gunpowder Cellar building adjoins the eastern fortress wall of the Kremlin, which in fact serves as one of the exterior walls of the adapted site. On the western side of the Gunpowder Cellar, a stone porch is attached, featuring a shingle roof like the main building.
The heritage site is a three-level building, where the lower level is essentially a basement floor, and the upper level should be considered an attic floor.
The building incorporates stone walls dating back to the 17th century (the lower sections of the walls and the vaults of the basement), which were extended upwards with an additional floor during the first stage of restoration in 1972–73. In the same years, a porch annex was constructed along the southwest wall of the building on the remains of the original masonry.
