About the project (provided by the applicant)
«Temple of the Laborers» is installed in a field near the village of Menchakovo, Suzdal, and represents a graphic volume made of metal ribs, reminiscent of a house frame with a pitched roof. The installation is dedicated to quiet, unnoticed labor through which great things are accomplished, yet often remain in the shadows. Architects of iconic buildings are celebrated, but behind every major work are hundreds of unknown craftsmen—masons, painters, plasterers, carpenters—without whom nothing would exist. The “Temple” is built from metal profiles and drywall (GKL), which are hidden behind the panels, yet support everything.
The concept is based on the bureau’s research of rural vernacular architecture that shapes the appearance of Russian villages. Installation with almost zero waste became part of an ethical approach to the site.
Today, the object is part of the modern tourist infrastructure of the old village of Menchakovo: it hosts works by contemporary architects and artists, and tourists can stay in guest houses.
