The main theme of the competition project is the historical fact of the mass extermination of civilians by the Nazis during the Great Patriotic War. The key idea behind the Historical Memory Center in the village of Zaitsevo is its sunken location. In this way, the building does not interfere with the perception of the Memorial Complex to the peaceful citizens of the Soviet Union who perished during the Great Patriotic War.
The Historical Memory Center is placed in a crater below ground level, which visitors reach via a long trench. The trench walls are clad in black metal panels, echoing the triangular pattern of the Memorial Complex façade. The building has no windows in the façade; natural lighting is provided by skylights in the roof. The cladding of the building follows the unified design principles of the Memorial Complex. White steel panels are intersected with scars of diagonal seams and rise above the black relief wall, creating an image of life’s victory over death.
