About the project (provided by the applicant)
The Russian premiere of the ballet “Zorba the Greek,” set to the music of Mikis Theodorakis, took place in Kazan in May 2024. The libretto, choreography, and staging were created by Leonid Leonidovich Myasin, son of the famous dancer, choreographer, and associate of S. P. Diaghilev — Leonid Fedorovich Myasin. The ballet was first staged in 1988 in Italy at the Arena di Verona. Subsequent productions took place worldwide, but the ballet had never been performed in Russia.
In Kazan, an exclusive authorial edition of the ballet was presented, realized personally by L. Myasin. The set designer, Honored Artist of Russia Viktor Gerasimenko, created two-level scenery reminiscent of the architecture of ancient Hellas. Monumental caryatids, symbolizing Eternity, overlook the plot’s twists and turns. An integral part of the artistic solution is video projections (video artist — Dmitry Shamov).

Located in Kazan (Republic of Tatarstan), it traces its history back to 1874 (as Kazan Opera) and 1939 (as the Tatar Theatre of Opera and Ballet). Director — Raufal Mukhametzyanov.
