About the project (provided by the applicant)
This Maritime Museum in Galle celebrates Sri Lanka’s rich maritime heritage from the Portuguese, Dutch, and British eras. Inspired by traditional timber shipbuilding, the design merges ancient craftsmanship with modern construction techniques. Positioned to capture panoramic views of Galle’s coastline, the museum connects history with nature. Its organic form contrasts with the historic context, reflecting a respectful yet modern identity. The layout represents different maritime eras and creates framed views of landmarks like Galle Fort, Rumassala, and the harbor. Innovative timber structures, including laminated beams and timber louvers, provide structural strength, natural lighting, and ventilation. The museum integrates green spaces and maritime elements into the landscape, creating an immersive and educational experience that symbolizes the future of Sri Lankan architecture while preserving its legacy.
