Project
Ceramic icon featuring Martyr George Victorious for the temple facade in Gzhel

Category

Best Implemented Façade or Interior Project Using Ceramics

About the project

The tent church of Great Martyr George was built in 1912 through 1914 by architect Velikovsky on the order of porcelain manufacturer Kuznetsov.

The ceramic icon featuring Martyr George was made with the mixed method – they used the glazed ceramic bass relief and the smalta background. The inspiration source for the authors included the traditional icons telling the stories about George fighting the viper and the original style of the church.

The key objective of the project was finding the most expressive composition for the façade that would match its unique architecture and comply with the Orthodox icon painting tradition.
