The Aare Vertebra: Biomimetic Pedestrian & Cycle Bridge

Linking the central rail hub to Thunerhof in Thun, Switzerland, under the ESP/GVK 2035 masterplan, this 140m clear-span bridge eliminates local transit bottlenecks. Protected townscape sightlines and river grayling (Äsche) spawning beds ruled out pylons and in-stream piers. Conceived initially for Footbridge 2025, the scheme was subsequently advanced and detailed.Inspired by marine vertebrate osteology, an S-curved sinusoidal spine balances lateral thrusts between non-aligned banks. The core comprises 4 helical steel pipes bound by belts at 7m modules, morphing from circular at abutments to wide ellipses at midspan to optimize moment resistance. Working as a low-rise compression arch with an under-slung cable network, it maximizes structural depth beneath the deck.

Cantilevered ribs carry a 3-tier multimodal path: an internal cycling core, a runner mezzanine, and a top glazed observation deck, grounded into 8m barrier-free concrete pedestals.

Location

Panoramastrasse, Over Aare River, Thun, Switzerland
